OpenAI has released upgrades to its ChatGPT extension for the Google Chrome web browser, allowing the artificial intelligence tool to view open browser tabs. As reported by The Verge Tech, The Verge, and Unite.AI, the new features enable the chatbot to interact directly with content across active tabs. [1][2][3]

Users can access the feature by tagging Chrome within the ChatGPT web or desktop application, according to The Verge Tech and The Verge. OpenAI released a demonstration video showing a user asking ChatGPT to evaluate and compare three open tabs displaying different sofas. [1][3]

The feature update follows the discontinuation of OpenAI's standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser, as noted by The Verge Tech and The Verge. ChatGPT had previously expanded to more than 1.2 billion weekly active users as of September 2026, up from over 800 million weekly active users in late 2025. [1][3][7]

The release comes alongside security concerns surrounding browser extensions, as TechRepublic reported on October 14, 2026, that malicious Chrome extensions had affected 900,000 users by stealing chat logs from ChatGPT and DeepSeek. [4]
