Artificial intelligence company Anthropic updated its usage policy on October 8, 2026, to explicitly ban sustained abusive or cruel behavior toward its Claude chatbot. Forbes and The Verge both reported that the update represents the first major changes to the policy in over a year. The new rules aim to restrict high-risk misuse while placing clear boundaries on how users interact with the artificial intelligence software. [1][3][4]
According to The Verge, the policy update introduces explicit restrictions against sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior directed at Claude. The Verge further noted that Anthropic previously announced last August that Claude could end conversations with persistently harmful or abusive users. Forbes reported that Anthropic already maintains a mechanism where the chatbot terminates interactions with persistently cruel individuals. [1][3][4]
The updated policy also targets several other high-risk activities. The Verge reported that the new provisions address election interference, surveillance, weapons development, and propaganda campaigns. It also introduces stricter guidelines surrounding health and financial applications of the artificial intelligence software. [3]
Claude is a series of large language models initially released as an artificial intelligence chatbot in March 2023. Anthropic sells Claude-based agentic tools including Claude Code for software development and Claude Cowork for non-programmers. Separately, Investing.com News reported that Anthropic launched dashboard and animation tools for Claude on the same day. [2][8]
