Indian consumers are increasing their cash usage ahead of incoming charges on the national digital payment system, PYMNTS reported. Starting next month, the United Payments Interface system will charge a small fee on transactions exceeding 2,000 rupees, which is about 21 dollars. [1]

The upcoming fee structure is causing concern among local merchants and companies across the country, according to the Financial Times. A survey conducted by polling agency Local Circles revealed that 83 percent of respondents expressed opposition to the changes. [1]

India operates a developing market economy that ranks as the sixth largest in the world by nominal gross domestic product as of April 2026. The nation moved away from protectionist policies and extensive state control after a balance of payments crisis in 1991 led to broad economic liberalisation. [2]

The shift back to physical currency shows how sensitive consumers and small business managers are to transaction costs on daily payments. Merchants are adjusting their operations as the new digital payment fees take effect next month. [1]
