Tesla and SpaceX have established special committees to evaluate a potential merger, chief executive Elon Musk said on Tuesday during SpaceX's third-quarter earnings call. According to BBC Business, Seeking Alpha Markets, and The Verge, Musk called the combination a good idea, though he noted that shareholders must approve any deal and that no final agreement on terms has been reached. [1][2][4][5]

The Verge reported that the special committees were set up at the request of shareholders and consist of independent directors. As FTMQ Business reported earlier, Musk said he is excluded from the committee discussions due to his conflict of interest as chief executive of both companies. Seeking Alpha Markets noted that a combination could mark the largest corporate merger in history, with earlier reporting by FTMQ Business indicating the combined entity could be valued at $3.5 trillion. [4][5][15]

The announcement coincided with SpaceX posting its first profit as a public company, Reuters and The Japan Times reported. Musk is the chief executive officer and largest shareholder of both businesses. SpaceX completed its initial public offering in June 2026, raising $75 billion at a valuation of $1.77 trillion. [1][11][13][14]

The merger talks follow prior joint engineering efforts between the two firms. As FTMQ Business reported earlier, SpaceX previously assisted Tesla in developing an updated Roadster prototype equipped with air thrusters. BBC Business noted that special committees at both firms are actively examining the transaction, but there is no guarantee that a deal will be finalized. [2][16]
