Applied Materials officially unveiled its new five billion dollar EPIC chip research and development center in Silicon Valley, Fortune, Evertiq, and ConstructConnect News reported. The center is designed to accelerate semiconductor innovation and cut chip development time in half, according to Fortune and TradingView. Partner companies involved in the facility include Intel, Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung Electronics, Fortune reported. [1][8][9][10][11][12]

Despite launching the facility, shares of Applied Materials dropped nearly seven percent on Tuesday, extending a six-day losing streak, Seeking Alpha Markets reported. The stock fell by 32.29 dollars from its previous close to finish the trading session at 464.24 dollars, according to Seeking Alpha Markets. Investing.com News reported that the decline comes as the overall outlook for semiconductor equipment remains uncertain. [3][4][5]

Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Applied Materials is an American corporation that supplies equipment, services, and software for the manufacture of semiconductor chips. The company generated a record revenue of 27.2 billion dollars in fiscal 2024, primarily from its Semiconductor Systems segment which provides tools for wafer fabrication. [13][15]

The new investment comes as Silicon Valley faces shifting manufacturing dynamics. While the region is established as a global center for high technology and innovation, Fortune reported that most modern chip manufacturing facilities are now located overseas or outside California. [1][14]
