Walmart China Chief Executive Officer Christina Zhu is relying on Sam's Club locations, smaller portion sizes, and an ultrafast delivery network to fuel expansion, Fortune reported. Zhu, who was born in 1973 and serves as the first native Chinese chief executive of Walmart China, spoke about the strategy at the Fortune Leaders Forum in Macau in September. [1]

According to Fortune, Zhu noted that Chinese shoppers have become the most demanding customers globally. She recalled how her parents previously had to wake up early to shop at wet markets with limited guarantees of produce quality, whereas today Chinese consumers have widespread choices. [1]

Sam's Club is a subsidiary of Walmart that operates membership-only warehouse retail stores, according to Wikipedia. It ranked second in sales volume among warehouse clubs with 90.2 billion dollars in sales as of January 31, 2025, behind Costco. [3][4]

Walmart operates retail stores across the United States and 19 other countries, Wikipedia notes. The parent company is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, and was founded in 1962. [4]
