The United States Air Force has removed all of its heavy bombers from the Royal Air Force Fairford base in England and redeployed them to home bases in the United States, according to reports from Fortune, The Independent, NBC News, CNN, and Task and Purpose. The movement of aircraft follows an investigation into a foiled terror attack targeted at the base. Fortune reported that the planned attack was linked to Iran. [1][2][3][4][5]
A Pentagon official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed to Fortune that the bombers returned to their home bases in the United States. Aviation tracking groups, including the Military Air Tracking Alliance, had observed dozens of B-52 and B-1 bombers operating from the British airfield since the start of the conflict, Fortune reported. [1]
RAF Fairford is located in Gloucestershire, 100 miles west of London. The station is the United States Air Force's only European airfield for heavy bombers. It was established under the Department of Defense following the National Security Act of 1947, and the base routinely supports Bomber Task Force operations. [1][6][7]
The airbase has supported American bomber flights during conflicts in the Middle East for decades. It hosted operations during the 1991 Gulf War, the 2003 Iraq War, and the 2026 Iran war that began on 28 February 2026 following strikes by the United States and Israel. [1][7][8]
