The European Commission has confirmed an agreement to cap hybrid electric vehicle imports from China at 350,000 cars annually, Guardian Business and other outlets reported. The Guardian reported that the four year deal was established in Beijing and relies on World Trade Organization rules. The quota is scheduled to take effect in December. [1][3]
According to Guardian Business, around 800,000 battery and plug-in hybrids are expected to be sold this year following two years of rising imports. European officials project that the annual limit will reduce China's current 6 percent market share down to 3 percent. [1]
Additional coverage from Seeking Alpha Markets, EU Today, Sharecast.com, Bloomberg.com, and Admirals confirmed the planned annual limit of 350,000 vehicles as trade tensions persist. EU Today noted that Brussels enacted the measures to protect the European motor industry, while Guardian Business reported that the chief executive of Volkswagen backed the plan to bolster domestic manufacturing.
