The Bank of England has increased its key interest rate from 3.75 percent to 4 percent. Guardian Business and Reuters both reported that this decision marks the first rate increase by the central bank in more than three years, with the previous hike occurring in 2023. [1][11][12]

Eight members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted for the quarter-point rise, according to Guardian Business. The ninth member, Catherine Mann, voted for a larger half-point increase. Guardian Business added that oil prices remaining above $100 a barrel due to conflict in the Middle East fueled the decision. [1]

Central banks use interest rates to manage monetary policy and set the baseline cost for commercial bank borrowing, which influences consumer loans and savings accounts. Higher central bank rates usually increase mortgage costs for household borrowers while offering better returns on cash savings. [10][13][14]

The central bank signaled that additional rate increases could happen soon. Guardian Business and the Financial Times both reported that Bank officials warned of further interest rate hikes to prevent higher inflation from becoming persistent. [1][2]
