The new Facebook drama feature The Social Reckoning generated an estimated 5.5 million dollars at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, Fortune and TechCrunch reported. Studio estimates released on Sunday show the film opened in 2,606 North American theaters. Forbes Business confirmed the movie features Jeremy Strong starring as Mark Zuckerberg. [1][2][3]
The opening weekend performance fell below studio expectations, according to TechCrunch. The studio had previously projected the film to bring in 7 million dollars to 8 million dollars. TechCrunch noted that the performance makes the movie unlikely to match the commercial success of its 2010 predecessor, The Social Network. [2]
The Social Network generated a 22 million dollar opening weekend and earned 97 million dollars domestically in total, TechCrunch reported. The earlier film also earned writer Aaron Sorkin an Academy Award. Fortune reported that the new film focuses on a Facebook whistleblower who leaked incriminating details about the social media company. [1][2]
Meanwhile, the Universal Pictures horror film Other Mommy topped the North American box office with 27.5 million dollars from 3,365 theaters, Fortune reported. Produced by Blumhouse with a production budget of approximately 19 million dollars, the movie led the weekend slate despite receiving a D+ CinemaScore from audiences. [1]
