The United Kingdom audit regulator has confirmed it is leading inquiries into accounting irregularities at Manchester City Football Club. BBC Business and the Financial Times both reported that the Financial Reporting Council took over regulatory consideration of the case on 30 September 2026. The matter was previously handled by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. [1][3]

The regulator confirmed the move in a letter sent to the House of Commons business select committee, BBC Business and شبكة تواصل الإخبارية reported. The Financial Reporting Council stated that it is making preliminary inquiries, although no formal investigation has started yet. [1][5]

The inquiries follow a ruling by an independent commission that found Manchester City guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. According to BBC Business, those breaches included artificially inflating the financial position of the club. [1]

Manchester City Football Club competes in the Premier League, which is the top flight of English football, and plays home matches at the City of Manchester Stadium. Financial audits are designed to determine whether financial statements are accurately presented without material errors or misstatements. [7][8]
