Three former OpenAI researchers claim the artificial intelligence firm dismissed them for raising safety concerns rather than for company policy violations, according to reports by NPR and the BBC. OpenAI disputed the allegations, stating that the employees were let go for mishandling sensitive information. [1][2]
Former employee Mikita Balesni stated on social media that the group was fired for placing safety ahead of the corporation's short term interests, the BBC reported. Balesni released an open letter alongside the other ex-employees addressed to the ChatGPT developer. [2]
An OpenAI spokesperson told the BBC that an internal investigation confirmed the three individuals mishandled sensitive information outside established company procedures. The firm reiterated those claims in response to the open letter, according to the BBC. [2]
Tensions regarding safety and commercialization have previously surfaced at the company. OpenAI's board briefly ousted chief executive Sam Altman in November 2023 following internal concerns led by co-founder Ilya Sutskever and chief technology officer Mira Murati regarding Altman's handling of artificial intelligence safety, before Altman was reinstated five days later.
