Fed officials weigh rate hikes as economic growth and inflation stay high

Federal Reserve policymakers are divided over how fast to raise interest rates while economic growth reaches 3.4 percent and core inflation remains persistent at 3.1 percent.

Federal Reserve officials are debating how fast to raise interest rates as strong economic momentum continues in the United States, FinanceFeeds reported. Third-quarter Gross Domestic Product grew at an annual rate of 3.4 percent while core Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation stood at 3.1 percent, leading policymakers to agree that higher borrowing costs are required. Central bank leaders disagree on the speed of future rate hikes. According to Bloomberg, Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan expects two more interest rate increases but noted that the pace of implementation can be gradual. St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem is also weighing the appropriate path for policy restraint, FinanceFeeds said. Seeking Alpha reported that American Savings Bank expects one Federal Reserve rate hike in the fourth quarter of 2026. [1][5][9]

Higher interest rates and tech sell-offs are pulling down commodity prices. FinanceFeeds reported that gold fell to $3,880 while silver dropped below $50. Meanwhile, oil prices have moved higher. Fortune reported that Brent crude reached $118.07 per barrel, rising $2.67 from the previous day and up around $53 compared to one year ago. [1][3]

Borrowers face mixed trends in domestic mortgage markets. Money Magazine reported that average rates on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage were unchanged at 7.06 percent, with rates expected to remain near 7 percent through the end of the year. Yahoo Finance reported that mortgage rates moved lower after the central bank held borrowing costs steady. [2][6]
